What is a surety bond?

A surety bond is a three party agreement between you (the principal), the entity requiring the bond (the obligee, often a state agency or county), and the surety company that backs it. The bond guarantees that you will follow the rules of your license or contract.

If you fail to meet those obligations, a valid claim can be paid out from the bond, and you reimburse the surety. For most Delaware and Maryland license bonds, you pay only a small annual premium rather than the full bond amount.

Surety Bond FAQ

How much does a surety bond cost in Delaware or Maryland?

For most license and permit bonds, the annual premium is a small percentage of the bond amount, often between 1% and 10%, based on the bond type and the credit profile of the applicant. A $25,000 bond at a 2% rate would cost $500 per year, for example. You can see your exact premium during the online quote.

How fast can I get a surety bond?

Most standard license and permit bonds for Delaware and Maryland can be quoted, paid, and issued online in under 60 seconds. Larger or more complex bonds, such as performance bonds, may need a short underwriting review.

Do I need good credit to get a surety bond?

Many small license bonds are approved with just basic information. Larger bonds and high risk bond types do consider credit. If your credit is not perfect, we work with multiple surety carriers and can usually find a market that will write the bond.

What is the difference between a surety bond and insurance?

Insurance protects you. A surety bond protects the obligee or the public. If a claim is paid on your bond, you have to reimburse the surety company. That is why the surety underwrites your business and credit before issuing the bond.

Can A to Z Insurance write a bond not listed on this page?

Yes. The bonds listed are the most common in Delaware and Maryland, but our online portal supports a wide range of bond types. If you do not see your bond, search the full Propeller catalog or call us at 1 (888) 721-2511 and we will help.

Do you offer bail bonds?

No. A to Z Insurance does not write bail bonds. We only write surety, license, permit, performance, and other commercial bonds.
